LATIF

Just before we went our separate ways on the path, Blaine's hand snagged mine again, stopping me.

I met his sharp eyes, marveling at the way one look from him alone made my blood rush.

“What is it?” I asked.

“Tomorrow,” he said. And the word sounded just like a promise. “Is there anywhere else we can meet? I want to see more before we run out of time.”

Disappointment filled me.

“Somewhere more comfortable hopefully...”

The suggestion in his voice made me bite my lip as the disappointment was pushed out by pleased anticipation.

“The library,” I found myself saying. “Meet me there at noon. I will try to take the room in the back left corner. If that one has been taken, I will take the one next to it.”

“But can't anyone walk in?” he asked.

I shook my head, amazed that we were talking about this so openly. Like it really was okay for us to do.

“There are wooden doors so that the omegas can lock them.”

He lifted his brows.

“I didn't know that those existed on Mukhana.”

“For privacy in public places, yes.”

He smiled softly and then reached out, gently brushing a strand of hair back from my face.

“See you at the library, then,” he said.

I stood there, watching him walk away for far too long.

It was probably for the best that we moved somewhere cleaner. Blaine was covered in dirt from crawling through the cave. And his clothes were filthy from being discarded while we had...

I swallowed the thought away. I couldn't think about this now! Addy would be arriving to pick me up from the temple soon.

I hurried back, looking down at my own clothes as I went. They weren't too bad. The color hid some of the dirt. If anyone asked, I would say I had been cleaning the grounds.

I entered the path, rushing even more when I glanced up and saw how much time had really passed.

“Latif?”

The sound of Addy's voice stopped me in my tracks. I faltered, then spun around to see him, hurrying to reach me, his thick brows drawn into an angry frown.

“What are you doing out here?” he demanded.

“I—I didn't want to wait for you any longer, so I started down the path.”

“The priest allowed that?” he demanded.

“No—I was just heading back because I forgot to say goodbye.”

“Latif, you have to stop this,” he chastised, grabbing me by the arm to lead me away. “You are not an alpha. You can't just walk around on your own.”

I snatched my arm away.

“This is an omega area,” I spat. “Very few unmated alphas even come here.”

“I'm here, aren't I?”

“Yes, but you're my brother.”

He groaned.

“That's not—” He sighed heavily. “Just be quiet and come home.”

“Fine,” I muttered and used my anger with him as an excuse to bypass both of my parents, who were sitting in the kitchen talking, Al-mother's ankle resting on a chair.

“How was the temple?” Om-father asked.

“Fine!” I shouted on the way to my room.

“What did you say?” Al-mother demanded.

Addy began to argue at once, but I pulled my thick curtains closed and tuned out the sound of their discussion.
